Western Digital's 6TB external HDD has a maximum read speed of 130MB/s, which is the same as Western Digital's previous products. Western Digital has not disclosed the maximum write speed.
The HDD uses a shingled magnetic recording (SMR) method for writing data, which, compared to the conventional CMR magnetic recording method, allows for large capacity while saving space.
According to overseas media AnandTech, the new product is about 15mm thick, which is thicker than the existing 5TB external HDD. AnandTech points out that this makes it possible to add another platter inside the HDD case, further expanding the storage capacity.
'Expanding our portfolio with the world's first 2.5-inch 6TB external hard drive represents an incredible technological achievement and opens up new possibilities,' said Nitin Kachwaha, director of product management, Western Digital. 'With a massive 6TB capacity in a small 2.5-inch form factor and at an affordable price, this hard drive gives students, gamers, professional videographers and more the flexibility to store more content on a single portable drive.'
G-DRIVE ArmorATD will be available at Western Digital's official store and authorized dealers from the end of May 2024. The sales date of these products in Japan has not yet been decided.
