On May 16, 2024 local time, OpenAI and Reddit announced a partnership. Reddit describes this partnership as 'a partnership that will benefit both Reddit and OpenAI's user communities in multiple ways.'

Below is an overview of the Reddit and OpenAI partnership:

OpenAI will bring Reddit content to ChatGPT and new products to help users discover and participate in the Reddit community. To do this, OpenAI will access Reddit's Data API to provide users with structured, real-time content from Reddit. This will enable OpenAI's AI tools to better understand and showcase Reddit content, especially recent topics.
By building OpenAI's AI models onto its platform, Reddit will be able to provide new AI-powered features to Reddit users and mods.
-OpenAI will become an advertising partner of Reddit.

Regarding this partnership, OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap said, 'We are excited to partner with Reddit to enhance ChatGPT with unique, timely, relevant information and explore the potential to enrich the Reddit user experience with AI-powered features.'

'Reddit is one of the Internet's largest open archives of authentic, relevant, and up-to-date human conversations about anything and everything. Including it in ChatGPT upholds our belief in a connected Internet, helps people find more of what they're looking for, and helps new users discover their communities on Reddit,' said Steve Huffman, CEO of Reddit.

TechCrunch, a technology media outlet, noted that

OpenAI has strategic partnerships with media organizations and others , and expressed understanding of Reddit's partnership with them. However, they also pointed out that one big difference between the two is that 'OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is a major shareholder in Reddit, owning 8.7% of the company's stock.'

OpenAI emphasized that the partnership with Reddit was led by Lightcap's COO, and the decision was approved by OpenAI's independent board of directors.

On the other hand, some users on Stack Overflow, a knowledge community that has partnered with OpenAI, have rebelled against the initiative, deleting previous answers.
