Regarding Wear OS 5, which was developed based on Android 14, Google has promoted it as being 'focused on extending battery life.' In fact, when wearing a smartwatch and running in marathon mode, Wear OS 5 is said to consume up to 20% less power than Wear OS 4.
Wear OS 5 also adds a new feature called ' Flavor ' to the watch face creation format ' Watch Face Format' . This will allow developers to configure the most convenient combination when creating a watch face, and users can easily visualize and select the information they want to display on the watch face.
The Watch Face Format will also add the ability to display goal progress and more.
Wear OS 5 will also introduce a feature that displays the weather forecast for the day on the watch face.
Additionally, Wear OS 5 will allow third-party apps to collect data even while they are running in the background, and will also allow for historical data beyond 30 days. In terms of fitness features, Wear OS 5 also adds support for more advanced running metrics, including ground contact time, stride length, vertical oscillation and vertical ratio.
Additionally, for smartwatches with larger displays, Google has updated its existing library of adaptive layouts and components, and released new guidelines for designing responsive UI for different display sizes.
The number of Wear OS users is on the rise as battery life improves and various features are added. Overseas media The Verge reports that in 2023, Wear OS's user base grew by an astounding 40% in more than 160 countries and regions.
Regarding the official release date of Wear OS 5, The Verge states that 'Wear OS 5 will first be released on Samsung's new Galaxy Watch model and Pixel Watch 3, which are scheduled to be announced after fall 2024, and then on third-party or older smartwatches.'
