Instagram's algorithm overhaul will reward 'original content' and penalize aggregators

Instagram's previous content ranking method seems to have recommended 'posts from accounts with many followers' and 'posts from aggregator accounts that repost popular content' over smaller original content creation accounts. Instagram has announced that it will improve this situation to give more opportunities to original content creators.

The changes coming to Instagram are:

1. Changing the ranking method to give smaller creators more opportunities to stream
2. Replace recommended reposts with original content
3. Add a label to reposted content and link it to the account that created the original content
4. Remove content aggregator posts from recommendations

With the new ranking method, all eligible content (content that is original, does not violate the community guidelines, is not watermarked, and meets the recommended guidelines) will be recommended to a small number of users who are likely to enjoy it, regardless of whether they enjoy it or not. This will be determined by whether or not they follow the account that posted it.

In addition, two updates have been implemented to promote original content. The first is that 'if two or more identical pieces of content are found on Instagram, only original content will be recommended.' This means that reposted content in recommendations will directly replace the original content. According to Instagram, 'audio and visual signals will be used' to determine whether content is original or not. If some content has been edited, such as adding new narration or being remixed, the content will not be replaced.

The second update is that 'even if some of the content has been edited, reposted content will have a label added to it that links to the account of the creator of the original content.' A link to the original post will be added as a label to the reposted content, making it clear to users who view the reposted post what the original content is.

In addition, the company also announced that it will remove aggregator accounts from recommendations if they repeatedly share content they did not create (10 or more times in the past 30 days). 'Aggregators, we encourage you to create your own content going forward so that your posts continue to be recommended to users who do not follow you,' Mosseri said.

However, actions against aggregator accounts will not be taken if the account has permission to repost original content.

The changes will be rolled out over the next few months, but 'we want to be very cautious. We know there will be a lot of feedback on these changes, and I welcome it,' Mosseri said.
