AI-CONIC was created through a collaboration between Finnish coffee roaster Kaffa Roastery and AI consulting and training company Elev.
The opportunity came from Antti Merilecht, who works at Elev, being a regular at Kaffa Roastery.
One day, Kaffa Roastery and Merilecht came up with the idea of 'creating an innovative coffee blend with the help of AI.' Kaffa Roastery provided Elev with a large amount of data about coffee that it held. Elev used AI to output the best coffee blend proposal.
Experts at Kaffa Roastery test roasted the AI-suggested coffee blends and found the 'perfect blend' in a blind tasting, which will be sold under the name 'AI-CONIC coffee.'
According to Kaffa Roastery, 40% of the coffee beans used are from Fazenda Pinhai in Brazil, 25% from La Bolsa in Guatemala, 20% from San Lorenzo in Colombia, and 10% from Gerke in Ethiopia.
The price is 12.9 euros (about 2120 yen) for 250g. Delivery is limited to Europe and North America, but unfortunately Japan is not included.
According to the Associated Press, Finland has the world's highest per capita coffee consumption, at 12 kg per year.
Although Kaffa Roastery claims to be the 'world's first AI blend,' there are already examples of AI being used to create coffee blends. For example, in 2017, NEC and Yanaka Coffee, a specialty coffee bean store, implemented a project called 'Drinkable Library,' in which AI used literary reviews as source data to create radar charts of taste indices, and Yanaka Coffee's cup testers came up with coffee blends.
