Radiation dose map “Safecast Map” created by volunteers
Safecast is a radiation measurement project established in response to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident. Safecast participants use devices that can record radiation levels and location information to accumulate data, and a radiation dose map based on the information collected by volunteers is also made public.

Safecast was founded one week after the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, and participants use a device that combines a GPS and a Geiger counter to record radiation levels around the world. Safecast's base of operations is in the United States, but its main operations are in Japan.
Safecast has created a radiation dose map called the 'Safecast Map' based on the recorded data, and you can view the map at the following link.
Safecast Map
When you access Safecast Map, you will first see a map of the Fukushima Prefecture area. By default, the data measured so far is displayed cumulatively, so you can view the data by period. First, click the menu button in the upper left corner of the screen.
Click 'Safecast Snapshot' in the 'Layer' menu to view the measurement results divided by period. You can also hide the legend in the bottom right of the screen by clicking the x button.
The radiation dose measurement results around Fukushima Prefecture from March 11, 2011 to September 10, 2011 look like this. The area surrounded by the green line is the difficult-to-return zone.
By moving the slider in the upper left corner of the screen, you can change the measurement period of the data displayed. For example, the measurement results from March 11, 2012 to September 10, 2012 are as follows.
The measurement results from March 11, 2016 to September 10, 2016, five years after the disaster, look like this. You can see that the areas with high radiation levels are decreasing over time.
Safecast is recruiting volunteers to help with radiation measurement, translation, etc. on the following page.
