Worldcoin is a virtual currency that allows you to receive the digital currency 'WLD' by scanning your own iris using the biometric authentication device 'Orb'. The service started in July 2023, but even before then it was pointed out that iris scans were being performed on poor people without any explanation , and even after the service started, privacy and data issues were raised in Kenya and Spain . Due to security reasons, service provision has been temporarily suspended.

Worldcoin has announced that it will open source the software components of its biometric authentication device 'Orb.' Open sourced Orb-related software is published on GitHub under the dual license of MIT License and Apache License 2.0.

The software released this time complements Orb's already open-sourced hardware and iris recognition technology , and specifically makes it possible to verify the transparency and privacy aspects of Orb's image processing.
Worldcoin explains that the Orb software component, which has been open sourced this time, ``includes all the code to securely transfer captured images to the World App.''
Separately, we also announced 'Personal Custody,' which will allow users to store on their devices the information (images, metadata, derived data) used to generate the iris code generated by Orb and being verified by World ID. it was done. This gives users control over the flow of their personal information and ensures that it never leaves their hardware.
Personal Custody includes four components: ``device'', ``orb'', ``data package containing images'', and ``temporary backend storage for transfer'', and data will be handled using the following process.
1: The user's smartphone generates a public/private key pair and encrypts the data. Transfer the created public key to the backend.
2: The backend generates additional keys for all data that requires double encryption and forwards the public key to the orb.
3: Orb creates the images needed to verify the World ID.
4: Orb creates a separate data package, encrypts it, signs it to ensure authenticity and security, and sends the image to the backend before deleting it.
5: The encrypted data package is downloaded to the user's smartphone before being deleted from the backend.
What is important in the above process is that it is impossible to decrypt the data package on the backend. All data is encrypted with the public key, so the end result of this process is an encrypted data package that exists only on your device. Once a user's information is sent to the user's device, it will be deleted from the Orb. The use of double encryption within the end-to-end encryption envelope is said to be a safeguard to protect data confidentiality and privacy even if the user device is damaged.
With the implementation of Personal Custody, the option to store and encrypt users' biometric data will be deprecated.
Tiago Sada, lead software contributor at Tools for Humanity, which develops Worldcoin, told the overseas media The Block, ``Previously everything was deleted by default, but now users can delete their data. 'Now I have control over how I handle it. It definitely gives me peace of mind.'
