According to records kept at Britain's Imperial War Museum, the accident occurred on September 14, 1917. During the exercise, Acting Flight Lieutenant E. A. de Ville, who was flying a plane named Sopwith Baby, lost visibility in clouds and was struck by a 350-foot (approximately 100 meter) pillar extending from a land radio station. It seems that there was a collision.

The plane that collided stuck into the pillar, and the aircraft became perpendicular to the pillar. Fortunately, the pillars were made of steel, so they did not collapse, but they were badly damaged and looked like they were about to break at any moment. The pilot was unharmed, but had lost consciousness.

Meanwhile, a marine named Lars decides to rescue the pilot. He said he climbed the pillar to the plane that had lost its way around 300 feet (about 90 meters) above the ground. Lars took the pilot out of the aircraft and held on to a pillar until help arrived. Shortly after, Lars's subordinates Marine Knowlton and longshoreman Abbott arrived under Lars with a rope. It seems that they fixed the pilot and Lars' bodies and lowered the pilot to a safe place.

The report emphasized that the pillars looked like they were about to break, and that the force of the wind caused the pillars to shake violently. The Imperial War Museum wrote, ``The pilot's survival was due to the valiant efforts of these three men, who risked their lives and did not hesitate to rescue them.''
