The development team of the embedded OS 'OpenWrt' announces a development plan for its own hardware 'OpenWrt One' that costs less than $100

The development team of ``OpenWrt '', a Linux distribution for embedded devices, has announced plans to develop their own designed hardware `` OpenWrt One ''. OpenWrt One is scheduled to be sold for less than $ 100 (about 15,000 yen), and the proceeds will be used for the operation of the OpenWrt project.

OpenWrt is a Linux distribution developed primarily to be installed on network devices such as routers, and by installing OpenWrt on the device, users will be able to freely control the device. OpenWrt can be installed on numerous devices, including devices from well-known manufacturers such as ASUS, Buffalo, and ELECOM. A list of compatible devices can be found at the link below.

The OpenWrt development team has announced plans to develop a uniquely designed hardware called 'OpenWrt One.' OpenWrt One was co-developed with the team behind the Banana Pi single-board computer and will be priced under $100. Additionally, hardware design information will be made available as open source. The specifications of OpenWrt One are as follows.

SoC MediaTek MT7981B
Wifi MediaTek MT7976C (2x2 2.4 GHz + 3x3/2x2 + zero-wait DFS 5Ghz)
DRAM 1GiB DDR4
flash memory 128 MiB SPI NAND1
4 MiB SPI NOR
ethernet 2x RJ45 (2.5GbE + 1GbE)
USB (host) USB 2.0 (Type-A)
USB (device, console) Holtek HT42B534-2 UART to USB (USB TYpe-C)
storage M.2 2042 for NVMe SSD (PCIe gen 2 x1)
button 2 pieces (reset, user)
mechanical switch 1 boot selection switch
LED 2x (PWM driven), 2x ETH Led (GPIO driven)
external hardware monitoring EM Microelectronic EM6324 (GPIO driven)
RTC NXP PCF8563TS (I2C) with battery backup holder(CR1220)
power supply USB-PD 12-25V on USB-C port (optional 802.3at/af PoE via RT5400 module)
expansion slot mikroBUS
antenna connector 3x MMCX

The development plan for OpenWrt One aims to ``secure operating funds for OpenWrt,'' ``build a platform for learning about hardware and Linux,'' and ``provide a device with high scalability using mikroBUS, GPIO, and PCIe M.2.'' It is not intended to provide high-performance hardware. Therefore, it does not support high-speed communication standards such as Wi-Fi 7. It is also said that no dedicated custom OS will be created for OpenWrt One, and that regular OpenWrt will run as is.

At the time of article creation, a vote is being held among the development members regarding the use of the logo and the handling of profits. If the plans are approved by vote, final specifications are expected to be finalized within four to eight weeks.
