JAXA/JSAS (Institute of Space and Astronautical Science) has two goals: ``demonstrating high-precision landing technology on the moon'' and ``creating a lightweight lunar and planetary probe system to contribute to more frequent lunar and planetary exploration.'' To this end, we have been promoting the SLIM (Smart Lander for investigating Moon) project.
On September 7, 2023, SLIM was launched on a H-IIA rocket from Tanegashima Space Center along with JSAS's scientific satellite '
It entered lunar orbit on December 25, 2023, and landed on the moon on January 20, 2024.
According to a press conference held after landing, although the landing was successful, the onboard solar cells were not generating electricity.
