Chicago's Supercharger station lined with dead Tesla cars in the freezing cold: ``Dead robots are gathering here''

In the U.S. state of Illinois, temperatures in mid-January 2024 have been recording double digits below freezing every day due to the effects of a severe cold wave. Fox Chicago, the Illinois state station of the American news broadcasting station Fox, has reported that there is no shortage of EVs (electric vehicles) whose battery performance has drastically deteriorated due to the cold weather.

The weak point of EVs is the cold in winter. The charging performance of the lithium-ion batteries installed in EVs decreases when the temperature drops to an extreme level, resulting in less power than usual. As a result, when you try to get into an EV, there are cases where the battery is almost empty or the EV won't even start.

Due to the cold weather in Chicago, where temperatures have been in the negative double digits for days on end, there have been a large number of cases where EV batteries have completely died. In addition, it seems that not only the EV batteries but also the charging stations themselves are no longer functioning, and most of the superchargers in Chicago are unusable.

Therefore, you can see how Tesla cars from all over Chicago are gathering at Tesla's supercharger station in operation in the movie below.

Dozens of Tesla cars are gathered at the Tesla Supercharger station in Oak Brook, Illinois. All of the cars have run down batteries and are gathering to charge.

The man being interviewed jokingly said, ``There are dead robots gathered here.''

Another man said he had been lining up for eight hours, but he still hadn't been able to charge his battery.

Because it is not their turn to charge, some EVs are left in station parking lots, with their bodies completely frozen.

The only way to get your EV to a working Supercharger station is to hire a tow truck. Some EV owners complained that when they contacted Tesla service centers, they did not receive adequate response from Tesla.

However, even if the battery is dead, charging it as is will not solve the problem. Mark Bilek of the Chicago Automobile Trades Association said, 'All EVs can have issues dealing with extreme cold and require drivers to press a preconditioning button before charging the battery. Plug and... It's not a go, which means the battery needs to be at the perfect temperature for fast charging.'

In addition, FOX Chicago asked Tesla for an interview, but it seems that they did not receive a response.
