◆1: Difference in space occupied during installation
The dimensions of the new PS5 excluding the largest protrusion are 358 mm width x 96 mm height x 216 mm depth, and the dimensions of the initial PS5 excluding the base are approximately 390 mm width x 104 mm height x 260 mm depth. This is what it looks like when the new PS5 (left) and early PS5 (right) are placed side by side.

Comparing the parts that are the highest when placed horizontally, it looks like this. The new PS5 is about 1cm lower.

I combined photos taken of the new PS5 and the early PS5 from the same position, and displayed the early PS5 translucently on top of the new PS5. The new PS5 occupies a considerably smaller area when placed horizontally.

The new PS5 does not come with a vertical stand, but you can install it vertically by attaching a vertical stand (sold separately) . This is what it looks like when the new PS5 (left) and early PS5 (right) are placed vertically side by side. The new PS5 is compact in both height and width.

Comparing the size of the sides, it looks like this.

The new PS5 is considerably more compact than the initial PS5, but the radius of the stand is almost the same. Therefore, the width occupied is almost the same.

◆2: Differences in ports
The front of the early PS5 had a power button, disk eject button, USB-C port, and USB-A port.

The new PS5 has two USB-C ports lined up to the right of the power button. The USB standard is SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps on the left and Hi-Speed USB on the right.

With the new PS5, the disc eject button is built into the disc drive, so there's no need to press the button by mistake with the power button.

The back of the early PS5 looks like this. From the left, there are two USB-A ports, a wired LAN port, an HDMI port, and a power port.

In the new PS5, the order of ports has changed, and from the left there is an HDMI port, a wired LAN port, two USB-A ports, and a power port. The standard of the USB-A port is SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps.

◆3: Difference in cover
In the early PS5, you could access the additional SSD slot by removing the cover.

However, the cover of the early model PS5 was fixed quite strongly, and if the force was applied in the wrong direction when removing it, the claws of the cover could get caught inside the main body and cause scratches.

The new PS5's cover has been changed to a fixing method that can be easily removed with one hand.

In addition, the initial PS5 had two covers, one on each front and back, but the new PS5 has been changed to four, two on each front and back.

Another major feature of the new PS5 is that the disk drive is removable.

◆4: Difference in storage capacity
The internal storage of the initial PS5 was 825GB, and the actual maximum capacity was 667.2GB.

The new PS5 has increased built-in storage to 1TB, and the actual maximum capacity is 848.0GB.

◆5: Differences in exhaust heat and fan noise
In order to investigate the exhaust heat temperature of the initial PS5 and the new PS5, we used infrared thermography to measure the temperature near the exhaust port after playing the pre-installed ASTRO's PLAYROOM for 15 minutes.

The initial version of PS5 is 51.7 degrees.

The new PS5 had a temperature of 52.9 degrees.

In addition, when we measured the noise at a distance of 10 cm from the exhaust port under the same conditions, the noise of the initial PS5 was 39.5 dBA.

The noise level of the new PS5 was 40.2dBA.

◆6: Summary
The new PS5 is significantly smaller than the initial PS5, making it an attractive product for those who had given up on purchasing a PS5 due to space issues. However, the official PlayStation blog states that the game performance has not changed, saying, ``The technology and features that make the PS5 gaming experience available remain the same.'' Also, since PS5 supports SSD expansion , the difference in storage capacity cannot be said to be a decisive point. Therefore, if you already own a PS5 and are not having problems with space, there is no need to switch to the new PS5.
