Starship's first test flight took place on April 20, 2023, but the booster failed to detach and was destroyed in the sky.

In a September report , SpaceX blamed the failure of the first test flight on a propellant leak at the rear end of the super heavy booster. The leaking propellant caused a fire, which caused communication between the booster engine and the flight computer to be cut off, resulting in an uncontrollable situation. It is stated that in the second test flight, in addition to mitigating the propellant leak itself, the existing fire extinguishing system was significantly expanded.

In addition, as a countermeasure to the problem in which the foundation of the launch pad was destroyed during the first test flight, causing damage to the surrounding area, we significantly reinforced the foundation and added a flame deflector.

In addition, we have installed a 'hot stage separation system' that uses Starship's second engine to separate Starship and boosters, and developed a new electronic thrust vector control (TVC) system for the super heavy Raptor engine to electronically control hydraulic pressure. It is said that improvements have been made such as switching to control.

SpaceX applied for permission for the second test flight from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in September 2023 , and permission to launch was granted on November 15, 2023 local time.

After receiving permission to launch, SpaceX announced that it will conduct a second test flight at 7:00 a.m. local time on November 17, 2023 (22:00 on the same day Japan time).

The flight plan is as shown below. If everything goes according to plan, it will fly for 90 minutes after launch and splash down in the Pacific Ocean.
