Bing can now display AI-generated sentences in search result snippets

When you search on Google or Bing, a string of characters called a 'snippet' appears below the URL. This is displayed when the website creator sets it or when the search engine reads the content of the site, but Bing has newly started displaying ``AI-generated sentences'' in snippets. I did.

I actually searched for 'GIGAZINE' on Bing. There are various characters written below the URL, but this is a snippet.

You can determine whether a snippet was generated by AI by clicking the triangle icon next to the URL. If you see 'AI-generated caption' as shown below, it is an AI-generated snippet.

Snippets may not be generated by AI for some URLs.

Microsoft calls AI-generated snippets 'generative captions.' Generative captions are tailored to each search query, so different snippets will be generated for different queries. Generative captions do not directly reflect the text of a web page, but Microsoft says, ``Bing uses a myriad of signals and techniques to ensure the quality and accuracy of the text it generates.''

Website administrators can opt out of AI-powered snippet creation simply by using the “NOCACHE” or “NOARCHIVE” tags. Microsoft will also respect the 'NOSNIPPET' tag, which prevents snippets from being displayed, and the 'MAXSNIPPET' tag, which specifies the maximum number of characters.

In addition, Microsoft's AI has previously received severe backlash from readers by generating inappropriate questionnaires that predict the cause of death in articles reporting deaths.

Major newspaper companies criticize Microsoft, saying ``Microsoft's AI-generated opinion poll has damaged its reputation as a journalist'' - GIGAZINE
