I tried shooting a movie with 'Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K' which can shoot full-fledged video using the entire large full frame sensor of 6048 × 4032 pixels

Blackmagic Design, a comprehensive video equipment manufacturer, announced on September 5, 2023 the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K, a movie camera equipped with a large full-frame sensor with a native resolution of 6048 x 4032 pixels. I was able to borrow the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K, which uses open gate shooting using the entire area of a huge sensor and can take beautiful images that can withstand the big screen of a movie theater, so I actually tried shooting various movies. Photo review of 'Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K', a cinema camera that supports L mount and can shoot 6K video - GIGAZINE

Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K supports L mount lenses. This time I took pictures using Panasonic's 24-105mm/f2.8 and 24-70mm/f2.8 .

Also, the storage medium was an external SSD connected to the USB-C port. Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K only supports CFExpress cards (Type B) or external storage via USB-C. For external storage, it can be formatted to exFAT (Windows/Mac) or HFS+ (Mac). It is best to format the storage on your PC before using it.

Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K can simultaneously record high bit depth Blackmagic RAW and H.264 proxies. Since the dynamic range is preserved by Log shooting in a logarithmic color space, it is necessary to edit the colors using video editing software. This time, I used

DaVinci Resolve 18 , a video editing software provided by Blackmagic Design, to perform color grading using LUTs.

If you look at the movie below, you can clearly see that there is a difference between the video material shot in Log and the video after color grading. In addition, almost all of the videos shot in this review were shot at 6K resolution and 24fps, but due to YouTube specifications, the videos are at 4K resolution.

Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K can shoot video in 8 different resolutions. You can easily change the resolution by simply tapping the UI displayed on the LCD monitor. When you think of a professional cinema camera, you may think that it is difficult to use, but the strength of the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K is that the UI is very simple and easy to understand, so even beginners can easily operate it.

If you look at the following movie taken from the same location with the same composition and the same lens, you can see what it will look like when taken with 8 different resolutions, and you can understand the aspect ratio and cropping condition. 6K Open Gate, which shoots across the entire sensor, is the widest and largest camera.

I took a picture of a penguin swimming in an aquarium. The contrast between light and shadow reflected on the swaying water surface and the outline of the penguin illuminated by the light are clearly captured. The large sensor allows minute waves on the water surface to be depicted in detail without looking like a coloring book.

Similarly, I tried photographing a fountain.

A movie taken of elephants at a zoo. You can see the dust it stirs up with its long snout, the fine wrinkles carved into its skin, and the growth of fine hair on its body.

This is a movie taken of a snowy owl in a dark place. The Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K is optimized to minimize grain or noise in images, while maintaining the sensor's full dynamic range. In short, it is less likely to cause blackouts even when shooting in a dark place.

In recent years, smartphones have become capable of capturing images comparable to digital film cameras. However, when shooting night scenes with a smartphone, a situation where dark areas are painted completely black tends to occur. On that point, the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K has a large sensor that has an extremely wide dynamic range, making it possible to capture images that make the blacks stand out when shooting night scenes. The following is an actual night view shot, with the first half being Log shooting material and the second half being color edited footage.

When I actually used the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K, I realized that although it is a full-fledged cinema camera, it is extremely simple to operate and easy to use. The 5-inch LCD display is large and easy to operate by touch, and the UI is simple, so even first-time users can quickly get used to the operation.

When you look at the video you shot while editing the colors on your PC, you can see that it is certainly different from the video taken with a smartphone. The details that would otherwise be blurred or blurred in images taken with a smartphone were clearly captured in the images, and I felt that the amount of information in even the smallest details was solid. Of course, the images shot with a smartphone are beautiful enough, but if you keep in mind that you will be viewing them on a large screen, I feel that the images shot with the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K are better. Also, unlike a smartphone, the images you can capture can change dramatically by changing the lens, making it even more expressive.

However, the battery seems to last less than 1 hour in actual operation time. Since it is a cinema camera for professional use, you will need to prepare multiple power supplies and replacement batteries when actually using it. Also, if you include the battery and lens, the weight can exceed 2 kg, so we recommend using a sturdy camera rig and stabilizer.

The suggested retail price of the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K body is 399,800 yen including tax. Recommended for people who want to seriously create their own video works, such as movies and dramas.
