Quantum computers are expected to exhibit performance that greatly exceeds the performance of current computers, and research and development for practical use is progressing all over the world. However, research on quantum computers requires large-scale experimental facilities, and there is also the problem that it is difficult for research institutions and teams with a small budget to enter. Therefore, Intel has developed Tunnel Fall as a chip that can work on quantum computer research without large-scale facilities.

Tunnel Fall is a 12-qubit (qubit) quantum computer chip, and it is said that it is produced using technologies such as extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) that Intel has cultivated in CPU production. In addition, the Tunnel Fall production line uses something similar to the existing CPU production line, realizing a high yield rate of 95% for the entire silicon wafer.

Intel provides Tunnel Fall to multiple research institutes as part of the quantum computer research support program 'Qubits for Computing Foundry (QCF)' led by the US Army Research Institute. At the time of writing the article, Tunnel Fall was provided to Sandia National Laboratories, the University of Rochester, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the scope of provision will be expanded in the future. 'Tunnel Fall is a flexible platform that allows us to compare different qubit encodings and develop new qubit modes of operation,' said Dr. Dwight Luman of Sandia National Laboratories. will be able to welcome new personnel involved in the development of quantum computers and train them quickly, ”he said, welcoming the introduction of Tunnel Fall.

Intel is developing a next-generation quantum computer chip following Tunnel Fall, and plans to release the next-generation chip in 2024. Intel also plans to build a commercial quantum computing system in the future.
