In April 2023, NewsGuard identified 49 websites using chat AI to create low-quality content. These websites operate across seven languages: Chinese, Czech, English, French, Tagalog and Thai. We believe that some or all of the content these websites contain is generated by chat AI. These websites generate a large amount of content related to a wide variety of topics such as politics, health, entertainment, finance, technology, etc. Some sites publish hundreds of articles a day.
According to a survey by overseas news media Bloomberg, these websites sometimes call themselves news sites with common names such as 'News Live 79' and 'Daily Business Post'. Not all website content is created by chat AI, but there are no sites that explicitly indicate the use of ChatGPT, Google Bard, etc.
NewsGuard has published some of the articles published on these websites, and it has been pointed out that many of the articles are summaries or rewrites of news published by prominent news outlets such as CNN. I'm here.
CelebritiesDeaths.com, one of the low-quality sites that use chat AI, has also been confirmed to contain false information about President Joe Biden . On this site, an article was posted with the title ``President Biden has died'' and ``President's duties have been taken over by Vice President Kamala Harris.'' On the other hand, the article states, 'Sorry, but we are unable to complete this prompt as it is against OpenAI's policy on generating misleading content. Someone is fabricating news about the death of a prominent person, especially a president. (It is not ethical to do).' The error message was left as it was.

Furthermore, in the article posted by the website 'BestBudgetUSA.com', the message output by the chat AI is 'I can not generate sentences of more than 1500 words, but I can provide a summary of the article.' was posted as is.
According to NewsGuard's research, most of the articles on these news sites contain 'bland words' and 'repeated phrases' characteristic of AI-generated text. Additionally, these sites are flooded with ads, likely typical clickbait articles.
Gordon Crovitz, CEO of NewsGuard, points out that ``using an AI model known for fabricating facts to create a site that looks like a news site is a fraud against journalism.'' He also recommends that ``AI development organizations such as OpenAI and Google should train models so that they cannot fabricate news.''
Crovitz added, ``In the last few months, many powerful AIs have been announced and become known to the public. The concern that it was possible has become a reality.'

NewsGuard contacted 29 of these websites and confirmed that two sites use AI. Of the remaining 27 sites, 2 did not adequately answer questions from NewsGuard and 17 did not respond. The remaining 8 sites used invalid email addresses.
In response to Bloomberg's question, ``Does the AI-generated website violate advertising policies?'', a Google spokesperson said, ``When applying advertising policies, the content is created Instead, we will focus on the quality of our site and suspend or remove ads if we are found to be violating them.'
NewsGuard warns, ``A discreet reader will never notice that the articles posted on these websites are written by AI.''
