A YouTuber who accidentally got hold of a pre-release Magic: The Gathering card was visited by agents from Wizards of the Coast, the game's distributor.

Magic: The Gathering is the world's first trading card game with over 50 million players worldwide. A YouTuber who obtained a Magic: The Gathering card before its release had an agent from Wizards of the Coast, the distributor, come and collect the card. The person in charge of collecting the card was Pinkerton Detective Agency, an American private detective and security company.

Pinkerton was founded as a private detective agency and has a history of being used for strike-breaking and other purposes. It has offices in most cities in the United States, and at the time of writing, its form is 'diversifying beyond just detective work.' Pinkerton has appeared in numerous movies and TV dramas, and is known for appearing in Red Dead Redemption 2 , released in 2018. A new business reported for Pinkerton is 'collecting pre-release Magic: The Gathering cards.'

YouTuber Oldschoolmtg was the one who got the pre-release Magic: The Gathering cards. He said he had purchased 22 boxes of ' March of the Machines, ' which will be released on April 21, 2023, but what he received was a box of 'March of the Machines: After the Battle, ' an epilogue booster scheduled for release on May 13.

Oldschoolmtg believes that the trading card dealer he knows did not intentionally send him the pre-release Epilogue booster. 'The names of 'Advance of the Machine Corps' and 'Advance of the Machine Corps: After the Battle' are too similar, so I think someone sent the card to me by mistake,' he said.

On April 22, the day after he received the card, Oldschoolmtg was filming a video for YouTube when the doorbell rang at his house and his wife answered. An agent from Pinkerton Detective Agency appeared at the front door and explained to him that they had come to retrieve the card that had been stolen from Wizards of the Coast, and that theft could be punishable by jail time. Oldschoolmtg's wife was so scared that she started crying.

The Pinkerton agent urged Oldschoolmtg to call Wizards of the Coast to resolve the issue, but Oldschoolmtg said the agent was 'very kind and apologized to my wife for surprising her and making her cry first thing in the morning.'

Oldschoolmtg said, 'It remains a mystery whether someone stole the card or whether it was just an accident that I received a pre-release card,' and it is unclear why he received the pre-release card. However, Wizards of the Coast asked him to return the card to identify the problem. Also, when Oldschoolmtg learned that he had paid a high price to purchase the card, they promised to compensate him by sending him another product.

In the video below, Oldschoolmtg recounts what happened when agents of the Pinkerton Detective Agency showed up at his home.

In the comments section of the video posted by Oldschoolmtg, there are many critical comments about Wizards of the Coast using Pinkerton to recover cards, such as, 'Wizards of the Coast has sent agents of a notoriously violent private company to steal your property and threaten your family. If this happened to me, I would sue Wizards of the Coast,' and 'This is almost certainly illegal. Pinkerton is not the police. They do not have a warrant, which means they cannot legally enter your home or seize your property. Contact a lawyer as soon as possible.'

When Kotaku, a foreign gaming media outlet, contacted Wizards of the Coast, a spokesperson for the company responded by saying, 'We have dispatched agents from Pinkerton Detective Agency as part of our investigation.'

According to Oldschoolmtg, Wizards of the Coast has apologized for using Pinkerton agents to retrieve the cards. Oldschoolmtg also revealed that his channel subscribers doubled after he made a video about the incident.
