The classified document in question was posted on a dedicated War Thunder forum on January 16, 2023. A user with the handle ``spacenavy90'' wrote in

a post , ``I discovered something interesting during my research. You can see how 16A is equipped with AIM-120 and uses TWS ( tracking while searching ) on the non-MFD (non-multi-function display) control panel 'SCP'.'

A document file was attached to the post, but the moderator deleted it and replied, 'This document contains data with export restrictions and is prohibited by US law from being published.' This finding led to controversy among forum members, as it turned out that the document was part of an F-16 flight manual.

One forum user noted that although the posted flight manual's 'confidential status' has expired, distribution is still restricted and will remain so for the foreseeable future.

Anton Yudintsev, founder of Gaijin Entertainment, which operates War Thunder, told foreign media Axios, ``For example, in War Thunder, there are people who like Leclerc , a real French tank. Such a person will want to appeal to the development team to improve the performance of the tank by providing some kind of material.'

Yudintsev's reference to the Leclerc tank comes in light of an issue in 2021 when classified documents about the Leclerc were posted on the War Thunder forums. In the same year, a similar leak occurred with a British tank.

According to Yudintsev, there have been at least six incidents of leaks of classified documents reported by community members of the forum and dealt with by moderators by deleting them.

“We do not use confidential or restricted information in our work,” Yudintsev said. ”He called on game fans not to post leak information.

In War Thunder, confidential documents have been leaked many times. Similar to the case of Leclerc mentioned above, in June 2022, a problem occurred in which a player dissatisfied with the tank's performance posted confidential information of the People's Liberation Army of China on the forum.

Also, although not directly related to War Thunder, in April 2023, there was an incident in which US government military secrets were leaked to Discord, a chat service favored by gamers. A 21-year-old Massachusetts Air National Guard has been arrested in the case on suspicion of violating the Espionage Act.

In a post-incident blog post , Clint Smith, Discord's chief legal officer, said, 'Like any other online platform, military intelligence documents are a significant and complex subject for Discord.' He acknowledged that the leak of military secrets is a headache not only for military personnel and governments, but also for the platform side.

Axios also said, ``What these incidents have in common is the parochial atmosphere of online forums. It makes me feel like I'm giving permission to do so.'
