On January 11, 2023, Mr. Bretton discovered and reported that CNET's financial commentary article was created by AI.

Articles created by AI are displayed as 'CNET Money' as the author, and at first glance they cannot be distinguished from articles created by AI.

However, clicking on the 'CNET Money' link states, 'These articles were created using an AI engine and were reviewed, fact-checked and edited by our editorial staff.'

CNET has 73 articles created by AI so far, the first being an article on November 11, 2022, ``What is a credit card charge-off?''

In 2022, Google announced that it would penalize content generated by AI, but Mr. Bretton points out that CNET articles created by AI are gathering a lot of traffic.

CNET is not the first to create articles using AI, and in 2015 the American AP communication announced that it was 'one of the first news agencies to utilize AI.' The Washington Post has also announced that it used AI to live stream the 2020 US presidential election as a podcast.
