I looked at the history of UNIX 'Unix History' from 1969 to 2022 with 40 sheets of A4 paper

Éric Lévénez, who studies the history of computers, presented `` UNIX History '', which shows the history of `` UNIX '' over 50 years in chronological order, which is the first OS written in a high-level language in history and is also called the founder of modern OS. It is open to the public. It is also possible to print on A4 paper, so I actually printed it and felt the length of its history.

The A4 print version of UNIX History has a PDF file link on the above site. Click the 'A4' link to download.

So, I actually printed this A4 print version PDF file with a printer.

40 sheets of A4 paper.

In order to connect 40 sheets, cut only the right end according to the finished size.

I'm going to connect it with cellophane tape.

I saw all 40 sheets side by side. When 40 sheets of A4 paper are connected, the total length is about 8.2m, and it was difficult to arrange all the sheets horizontally even in the conference room, so we arranged them in 20 sheets x 2 lines.

The start was UNICS, which was developed in 1969. It is based on an OS designed for mainframes jointly developed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology,

Bell Labs , and General Electric . After that, UNICS changed its name to UNIX, and development continued.

Version 4, released in 1973, was rewritten in C. From here, the derivation of UNIX began, and many OSes that followed the trend of UNIX were developed.

In the 1980s, too many OSs were derived, and A4 paper is packed with lineages. According to Lévénez, the OS listed in 'UNIX History' is not all, but actually there are 10 times this number.

In 1989,

NeXTSTEP , the ancestor of modern macOS, was born.

In 1991 Linux was born. According to Linux creator Linus Torvalds,

Linux has four birthdays . Of these, version 0.01 was secretly released to a small number of people on September 17, 1991.

Born in 1999, MacOS X Server will

be discontinued in April 2022 .

In 2001, Mac OS X, developed based on NeXT's OPENSTEP technology, appeared.

In the 2000s, the number of OS derivatives has decreased considerably, and each OS has been upgraded.

AppleTV 1.0 appeared in May 2007, and iPhone OS 1.0, which later became iOS, appeared in June 2007.

Versions of iOS and macOS X will progress. At the bottom is

Debian GNU / Hurd , which has been under development since 1998, and the name of Android released in 2008.

The UNIX series OS that is being developed in 2022 looks like this.
