The 25th anniversary of the birth of 'MAME', which was born as an arcade game emulator

' MAME ', which was born as an emulator that reproduces the operation of arcade games and has become a general-purpose emulator by expanding the range of support not limited to arcade machines, has celebrated its 25th anniversary.

'MAME' was originally an abbreviation for 'Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator' and is an emulator created by Italian software developer Nikola Salmoria. An 'emulator' is software or hardware that imitates operations or functions. As a result, it is possible to play by reproducing the operation of the game machine, but it is only a secondary effect, and the main purpose is 'to be a reference of the structure inside the emulated machine'. that's right.

Mr. Salmoria had made other emulators before this, and released it as MAME v0.1 on February 5, 1997 by integrating multiple emulators under one framework. After that, Mr. Salmoria gradually reduced his involvement in the development of MAME, and finally left MAME after his contribution in 2009.

MAME has been available for download on the official website for 25 years since v0.1, which was first released by Mr. Salmoria. For example, the v0.1 release notes look like this.
