The raw material for this Mars version of tomato ketchup is the same tomato as the conventional one, but it is cultivated in the same harsh environment as Mars.

This Martian version of Tomato Ketchup begins with the work of Dr. Andrew Palmer of the Florida Institute of Technology Aldrin Space Research Institute. The theme of this research is 'Can plants grow in a long-term environment that imitates Mars?' After preparing soil that is chemically compatible with the soil of Mars, under the same temperature conditions and moisture as Mars. I was conducting an experiment to cultivate.

Therefore, Heinz, who has a lot of know-how on tomato cultivation, cooperated with Dr. Palmer to analyze the condition of the soil, select seeds, and introduce the latest agricultural technology. In the end, he succeeded in making ketchup that was as good as conventional tomato ketchup.

'Until now, efforts to discover ways to grow in a simulated Martian environment have focused on short-term plant growth research. This project is looking at long-term food harvesting. Harvesting a quality crop that would be Heinz's tomato ketchup was a dream come true, and we were finally able to achieve it. '

'We are delighted that our team of experts can grow tomatoes in a Martian environment and showcase the results to the world,' said Christina Kens, CGO (Chief Growth Officer) of the Kraft Heinz International Zone. From the 2019 Martian soil analysis to this harvest, it was a journey to prove that Heinz's tomato ketchup has been loved for generations. '

Heinz's tomato ketchup itself is also used at the International Space Station. Mike Mashimino, a former NASA astronaut who claims to be a big fan of Heinz's tomato ketchup and is also an ambassador for this Mars version of tomato ketchup, said, 'In space, sauce is important, not food.' Many space foods were dehydrated and a bit dull, so I used plenty of sauce to make the food delicious. '
