Users of the Dell XPS series of laptops have reported that during sleep, the battery drains faster than usual and the PC may heat up. The cause of this problem is said to be the standby method 'modern standby' introduced from Windows 10, and it has been reported that the same phenomenon occurs on MSI PCs and Surface Pro.
Modern Standby is a system provided by Microsoft that allows you to quickly turn Windows on and off like a smartphone. Compared to the conventional sleep, it goes through a step-by-step process, which makes it easier to wake up from the sleep state.
Dell reports in 2020 that PCs that support modern standby will drain faster during sleep. Dell has also reported an additional case with the XPS 13 (9343/9360/9370) where the battery consumes excessive power during night sleep. However, Dell explains that this behavior is 'normal behavior for modern standby' and 'there is no way to disable modern standby'.
Dell also recommends 'do not put it to sleep, but turn it off,' for long trips, especially if you carry your laptop on an airplane.
