In 2015, Microsoft partnered with ConsenSys to announce its own blockchain service, Ethereum Blockchain as a Service (EBaaS). This is the beginning of blockchain services in Azure, after which DevTest Labs will be able to build and test blockchain technology in late January 2016. This has enabled blockchain-related services and partners to decouple blockchain technology from virtual machines.
The short-term goal of blockchain services in Azure was to make all certified blockchain marketplaces available. Instead of supporting only a limited number of blockchain partners, Microsoft's goal was to make Azure blockchain services available to all partners.
Then, in 2019, Microsoft announced a preview version of Azure Blockchain Service to simplify blockchain service construction. Microsoft's Azure Blockchain Service customers include GE , JP Morgan , Singapore Airlines , Starbucks , and Xbox .
Microsoft has announced that it will end such an Azure Blockchain Service on September 10, 2021. Users are able to move to alternatives and recommend ConsenSys Quorum , a blockchain service from ConsenSys. 'We are pleased to offer the award-winning Quorum to Azure users as the next step in our collaboration with Microsoft,' said Joseph Lubin, CEO of ConsenSys.
Please note that existing deployments will be supported until the end of service, but as of May 10th, support for new deployments or member creation has ceased.
Technology media ZDNet has asked Microsoft why they are terminating the Azure Blockchain Service, but they said they didn't get a response at the time of writing the article.
