Development of 'TenFourFox' web browser for Power Mac is finally finished

by

Cameron Kaiser

It has been announced that the TenFourFox web browser, which uses the same engine used for Firefox and is designed for Macs with PowerPC , will end development with the upcoming release of FPR32. Developer Cameron Kaiser wrote on the development blog about the reasons for the end of TenFourFox development.

TenFourFox Development: The end of TenFourFox and what I've learned from it

TenFourFox, a browser for Power Mac developed about 20 years ago, still has users as of 2021, and TenFourFox's server records about 2000 accesses per day. TenFourFox was updating on the same schedule as the current Firefox patch release, but the update scheduled for September 7, 2021 provided a patch with the same security and stability as Firefox 93. Later, it was announced that the update would be stopped.

TenFourFox was one of the few browsers that supported TLS 1.3 on PowerPC Mac OS X, and was the only browser with JavaScript JIT. AppleScript, which wasn't implemented in Firefox, is also supported, and Kaiser says he's proud to be able to implement a number of features, including these.

But it's also true that we're starting to get tired of implementing complex web features in TenFourFox these days, Kaiser said. Even with long coding tasks and complex JavaScript updates, it can be difficult to implement the latest technology in TenFourFox, so it's more practical than forcing Kaiser to implement features he doesn't even use. He thought it would be best to stop the update with the current version, which has enough features.

Kaiser said that maintaining a data center at home costs about $ 600 a month, which is another factor in stopping updates. We publish free code to Tenderapp for user support, SourceForge for binary hosting, and GitHub for project management, including TenFourFox, and TenFourFox revenue is basically paid only to domain names. Only a small amount of advertising revenue. He also said that he wanted to be able to freely use the 'time' that is more of a burden than money.

Kaiser concludes that TenFourFox has become easy enough for thousands of people who are still using it, and the time spent developing TenFourFox was worth it.
