Ryan Sipes , Mozilla's managing director of products, posted on March 29, 2025 in a forum to discuss future plans for Thunderbird about the development of Thunderbird Pro and Thundermail.
According to Sipes, Thunderbird is losing users every day to a rich ecosystem of both clients and services such as Gmail and Office 365. In addition, Gmail and Office 365 have both hard vendor lock-in (intentionally causing problems in interoperability with third-party clients, causing users to leave) and soft lock-in (enclosure of users through convenience and integration of clients and services). Mozilla's goal is to provide a service equivalent to Gmail and Office 365 as 100% open source.
Mozilla is developing Thunderbird Pro and Thundermail, which are web services that improve the Thunderbird experience, but are all developed as open source. Thundermail is like a Mozilla version of Gmail, a web-based email service that can be accessed from a browser and is developed based on the open source software stack Stalwart . Initially, it will only be an email service, but it is said that contact and calendar services will also be integrated.
At the time of writing, the Thundermail beta waiting list is open to the public, and you can sign up to get access to Thundermail as soon as possible.

Thunderbird Pro is a paid subscription service that allows you to use services such as the scheduler ' Thunderbird Appointment ', the file sharing tool 'Thunderbird Send', and the Flower AI- based AI assistant 'Thunderbird Assist', which is similar to Apple 's Private Cloud Compute and takes privacy into consideration. Thunderbird Appointment and Thunderbird Send can also be run on your own server.
Thundermail and Thunderbird Pro will be free for 'users who contribute to the community' at launch, but other users will be charged a fee. However, detailed pricing has not been disclosed. Thundermail is also expected to offer a limited free plan in the future, similar to other webmail services.
'Thunderbird is unique in the world. We value open source, open standards, privacy, and respect for our users, and that needs to be expressed in many ways. The lack of web services means users have to make compromises that are often unpleasant. We're fixing this with Thundermail and Thunderbird Pro,' Sipes said.
