The secret story of making the blockbuster movie 'Omniverse II' that took 11 years to produce with 'Line Rider' that allows you to freely create a sled gliding course

The line drawn with the mouse becomes the course as it is, and in '

Line Rider ' where a small person runs with a handmade sled, various difficult courses are made, and a movie that slides along with classic masterpieces is released. , There are many strong fans. David Lou, who released a course called 'Omniverse II' that he produced over 11 years as part of his art work with Line Rider in 2019, explains the process of production on his blog.

Lou recalls that Line Rider was released in 2006, and the Line Rider community was most active around 2007-2008. It was in 2007 that Mr. Lou announced his previous work 'Omniverse'. Omniverse is a course created using the technique of 'moving Line Rider's sled freely using invisible lines' and original music, and it was an opportunity for the community to break new ground of 'omni style'. It was a work.

Then, Lou tried to participate in a competition held within the community with 'Omniverse II' following Omniverse. However, as a result of trying to introduce too many attempts, Mr. Lou was not able to meet the deadline at all, and Mr. Lou decided to participate in the competition with the beta version called 'Omniverse II beta' below.

However, even though the submitted work was a beta version, he said that he won the competition. Still unconvinced, Lou devoted himself to the production of the 'Omniverse II Completed Edition,' which incorporates elements of what he has been keenly interested in and what he likes, in order to complete Omniverse II.

Around 2010, Mr. Lou lost his motivation to produce Omniverse II because Line Rider's course tools were so difficult to use. However, in the meantime, Lou went to Carnegie Mellon University of Arts to study programming, developed an improved version of Line Rider from scratch in Python, contacted the developers of Line Rider, and redeveloped Line. We have succeeded in greatly remodeling Line Rider itself, such as releasing Rider as an official version.

With the official release of Line Rider, which was redeveloped by Mr. Lou, many of the problems that occur when creating Omniverse II have been resolved, and Mr. Lou is said to have refocused on the production of Omniverse II. In addition, Mr. Lou's art theory he learned at university and the knowledge he gained from traveling around the world also had a great influence on his work.

By 2017, when Mr. Lou resumed production of Omniverse II in earnest, the Line Rider community had shrunk considerably. Nevertheless, Mr. Lou continued to work in collaboration with the remaining members of the community, and finally released the completed version of 'Omniverse II' in 2019, 11 years after the start of production.

The sled slides out of the black window.

At first, the course looks like a sphere or curved surface reproduced with a wire frame. This part has been in the course plan since the beginning of making Omniverse II, and it seems that it is inspired by the graffiti that Mr. Lou left in his notebook 20 years ago and the

hole that the black hole makes in the gravitational field .

A sled that slides through a polyhedron. This polyhedron is called

Waterman's polyhedron, and it is said that Mr. Lou traced it by hand.

Go through a group of tetrahedra ...

The sled slides on a complicated course.

When it is thrown out of the course at a tremendous speed ...

The camera pulled sharply and I could see a part of the Omniverse II world. 'YOU MUST ESCAPE' is written on the coordinate plane of Gnyagnya. This message was drawn by Mr. Lou's friend on the wall of the bedroom.

And it is the world composed of straight lines that the sled that fell has started to slide again. It seems that this world is an image of an electronic circuit.

The world made up of straight lines eventually becomes full of curves and collapses. The expression 'distortion that suddenly appears in the world composed of straight lines' is said to be influenced by the RPG '

Battle Network Rockman Exe 2 ' released as a title exclusively for Game Boy Advance in 2001.

The course made of curved surface has a structure that can not be escaped without looping many times.

And at the same time as the sled starts to slide upward again, the camera pulls sharply ...

The sled climbs like sewing the gaps between the entwined tapes ...

You can see the whole picture of Omniverse II. On the left was the previous Omniverse.

The sled climbs a double helix like DNA.

The double helix ribbon eventually turns into a cube and a tetrahedron ...

Eventually, the number of lines will increase and the world will become narrower. In the video, the course is moving around, but in reality it is not moving, but it seems that the course is moving according to the principle of animation at the same time as the sled rises at high speed.

When the world is completely closed, 'OMNIVERSE II' will be displayed and the staff roll will begin. When the staff roll is over, the '

Internet meme that was popular at the time' that Mr. Lou wanted to include in the work from around 2006 will appear. If you are interested in what the ending will be, please check it with your own eyes.
