On February 17, 2020, China's Center for the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases published a study that states that 'COVID-19 hardly develops in children, but the probability of illness increases with age.' Details of the study can be found by reading the following articles.
The lethal rate of the new coronavirus is 2.3% and mild symptoms are more than 80%, but the mortality rate varies greatly with age-gigazine
CDC published a similar study that focused on children. The CDC analyzed in detail the children under the age of 18 who were infected in the United States between February 12 and April 2, 2020. We investigated the probability of infection of children and the condition of children.
As a result of the survey, the CDC confirmed that 'children are less susceptible to COVID-19' and 'children are less susceptible to COVID-19'. In the United States, children under the age of 18 make up 22% of the population, but of the 140,982 confirmed domestic infections, only 2,572 children under the age of 18 (about 1.7%). Of 2,572 infected people under the age of 18, 398 (15%) had children under the age of 1, 291 (11%) were 1 to 4 years old, 388 (15%), 10 to 5 to 9 years old The age of 14 is 682 (27%), and the age of 15-17 is 813 (32%).
By gender, 57% of children infected were male. Since 53% of adults in the United States have male infections, there is a tendency for men to be slightly more susceptible to those under the age of 18. Of the 184 known transmission routes, 16 (9%) were travel-related and 168 (91%) were from families or communities.
Regarding the severity of the disease, hospitalization was confirmed in 745 (29%) of infected children under the age of 18 and 35,061 (31%) in adults aged 18 to 64. It was not possible to determine the hospitalization status of all infected people. According to the CDC, '5.7% to 20% of children infected needed hospitalization and 0.58% to 2.0% were transported to the intensive care unit (ICU). The required ratio is 10 to 33%, and the ratio of transported to the ICU is 1.4 to 4.5%. ' However, infants under the age of 1 accounted for the highest percentage of children in hospital (estimated 15-62%), and children aged 1-17 were less likely to be hospitalized at 4.1-14%.
The following graph shows that patients under the age of 18 whose hospitalization status was confirmed could be transported to the ICU (ICU: light blue), hospitalized (Hospitalized: dark blue), or even hospitalized by age. (Not hospitalized: black) 'and shows the percentage of each. Looking at the graph of '[1 (Infants under one year old)', you can see that the proportion of blue is overwhelming, and more than half of the infants needed hospitalization. On the other hand, at the age of one year or older, the ratio of each color does not show much difference even if the age increases. According to the CDC, 'There was no variation in hospitalization by age over the age of one.'
The table below compares the condition of children under the age of 18 with those of adults aged 18-64. The left column shows the number of symptoms indicated by 'Pediatric (child)', and the right column shows the number of symptoms indicated by 'Adult' (adult). The symptoms are, in order from the top, `` Fever, cough, or shortness of breath (one or more of fever, cough, shortness of breath) '', `` Fever (fever) '', `` Cough '', `` Shortness of breath '', `` Myalgia '' (Muscle pain), `` Runny nose '', `` Sore throat '', `` Headache '', `` Nausea / Vomiting '', nausea / vomiting, `` Abdominal pain '', `` Diarrhea '' It has become. Looking at the item of 'fever, cough, shortness of breath' which is the basic symptom of COVID-19, 73% of children are 93% and adults are 93%, and many children do not even have basic symptoms I understand.
Based on the above results, the CDC pointed out that `` Even if a child is infected with COVID-19, fever does not always occur, '' `` Asymptomatic infected people, including children, have transmitted COVID-19. It is highly recommended that people of all ages be socially separated and take preventive action on a daily basis because of the high likelihood of spread. '
