The generation that has lived with the internet and PCs close at hand since they were old enough to understand is called ' digital natives .' The digital native generation is often characterized by their greater mastery of digital devices and a greater reliance on smartphones and social media than previous generations. However, research has shown that the very idea of digital natives is an illusion and does not exist.

As technology advances, many schools and universities are incorporating new technologies, such as e-learning , into their teaching and learning processes. The adoption of digital technologies into learning processes has been seen as a legitimate practice due to the rise of the digital native generation.

And because education policy is particularly vulnerable to political whims, fads, and unchecked assumptions, it's prone to adopting a variety of new styles, with studies suggesting that teachers and education professionals use dozens of different 'learning styles.'

The digital native generation, at least in developed countries, grew up in this environment and were exposed to a lot of digital technology during their education. However, Paul Kirschner, an education researcher at the Open University of the Netherlands in Heerlen, the Netherlands, says that upon closer examination, the assumption of digital natives appears to be an illusion.

In a commentary at the Higher Education Academy held in York, UK in 2011, the first conclusion in the executive summary was that 'the new generations of young people entering higher education have no idea how terms such as 'Net Generation' and 'digital natives' are evolving.'

In fact, it has become clear that the generation known as digital natives use technology in the same way as older people, and that they are not necessarily better than other generations when it comes to multitasking, a skill that was previously thought to be superior to the digital native generation.
