We aim to design and provide optimum hardware for data center "Open Compute ProjectIs an engineer community led by Facebook. California state on January 28, 2014San JoseAt the Open Compute Project Summit took place on Facebook, Facebook uses 10,000 Blu-ray discs per cabinet to create an energy efficient data center with a capacity of 1 petabyteCold storageWe announced.

A movie explaining the "cold storage" system by Jay Parikh of the infrastructure optics department of Facebook can be seen from the following link.

Facebook has advocated a data center "cold storage" using a Blu-ray disc from 2013, and at the Summit of the Open Compute Project held on January 28, 2014, 10,000 Blu-ray discs Announced prototype of data center with 1 petabyte capacity. In the future, we plan to expand the capacity to 5 petabytes per cabinet.

By using a Blu-ray disc in the data center, the size of one cabinet is about 2 meters and it is no longer necessary to have a large-scale storage facility like a hard disk data center. As a result, energy usage can be cut by 80%, and the cost can be halved.

Endurance years of saved data is over 50 years, and disks stored in large quantities are selected by the pickup device and can be sent to the data writing system quickly. It is said that Facebook has already started operation for backing up some users' pictures, movies and so on.

3 EB currently stored within a few months (Exabyte) Data, 150 petabytes of data will be stored in cold storage. Following this announcement,AMD,Seagate,Quanta Computer,LSISeveral companies, including those planning to donate to this project, are planning to donate.
