Toshiba to release players using "XDE" technology that can make existing DVDs high definition image quality
Toshiba announced a DVD player that uses technology called "XDE" that allows you to enjoy existing DVDs with high image quality even on high-definition TVs and the like.
Since DVD has lower resolution than Blu-ray disc, it may become a boiled picture when watching it on high definition television, but this will make it possible to utilize existing DVD assets.

According to this release, Toshiba is going to release a DVD player "XD-E500" equipped with "XDE" technology that allows you to watch DVDs in the high-definition image quality for the American market. The price is 149.99 dollars (about 16,500 yen).
"XDE" is a function to up-convert the resolution of 480i / p of DVD software to 1080p which is the resolution of Hi-Vision television and so on, "Sharp Mode" which corrects edges accurately by analyzing the whole video and color It is compatible with three modes: "Color Mode" which makes it natural, and "Contrast Mode" which make it easy to view dark scenes.
It also supports playback of DivX format movie files recorded on DVD-R, allowing playback of JPEG images, MP3, WMA files.

Sony's PS3 has already upgraded DVD and DivX format files using CELL processor, but it is cheaper than PS3, so it may be just right for those who do not need Blu-ray not.
