President Trump's Executive Order 14420 prohibits the acquisition, import, transfer, and installation (in general terms, trade) of electrical equipment designed, developed, and manufactured by foreign countries (or foreign companies) that are subject to the U.S. arms embargo or sanctions system.
The products targeted include electrical equipment components, software, and digital services. President Trump pointed out that some foreign companies could potentially embed backdoors in this equipment, raising concerns about remote operation, and added that relying on foreign suppliers for critical infrastructure itself creates supply chain risks.
This order applies to transactions conducted after the date the executive order was signed, but it also imposes conditions on the continued use or equipment upgrades for transactions conducted before the signing date. In some cases, it may even be necessary to replace or remove equipment that is already in use.
President Trump had issued a similar executive order during his first term, but it was later revoked and partially revised by President Joe Biden.
