In the United States, more than 10% of desktop PCs use Linux.
The online analytics service Statcounter regularly updates its Statcounter Global Stats, which compiles usage market share data for operating systems and other technologies. It revealed that by July 2026, Linux's market share on US desktop PCs would exceed 10%.

The market share of each OS on desktop PCs in the United States is as follows: Windows 57.54%, OS X 21.14%, Linux 10.65%, macOS 8.6%, Chrome OS 2.06%, and OpenBSD 0%. Linux holds a market share of over 10%.
The market share trends are as follows. It can be seen that Windows' market share (blue line) has been on a downward trend since around April 2026, while Linux's market share (red line) has been on an upward trend.
The following is the global OS market share for desktop PCs. Linux accounts for 7.53%.
Linux's market share in Japanese desktop PCs was 5.04%.
The game platform Steam also updates its ' Steam Hardware & Software Survey ' monthly, which compiles user OS and device usage data. The July 2026 survey showed Linux's market share at 4.01%. This represents a slight decrease from the over 5% share seen in March 2026. Looking at individual distributions, SteamOS Holo had the highest share at 0.89%, followed by CachyOS (0.57%), and a tie for third place between Arch Linux and Linux Mint (0.33%). Both SteamOS and CachyOS are based on Arch Linux.
