When using an AMD GPU, Windows users typically install the AMD driver. Linux, on the other hand, distributes not only AMD drivers but also open-source driver implementations. Among these, Louis -Francis Ratté-Boulianne, an engineer at Collabora , is working on porting the Radeon Vulkan driver (RADV), managed by the Mesa project , to Windows.

Attempts to port RADV have been considered for some time, and in 2024, 3D graphics expert Faith Ekstrand announced the foundational technology for running RADV on Windows.

Building on Ekstrand's work, Ratté-Boulianne continued his research and successfully ran Windows games on RADV. Below is a screenshot of 'Counter-Strike 2' rendered using Vulkan after installing RADV on Windows.

According to Ratté-Boulianne, the porting of RADV to Windows was carried out with the support of Valve, the operator of Steam. The research results are published in the following repository.

Note that the Windows version of RADV is not yet stable, and to make it stable, it will require either a 'stable and documented interface to the proprietary kernel-mode driver (KMD)' or a 'library to mediate communication via private data channels.'
