Microsoft permanently suspended compromised accounts to protect data, but later restored them after public backlash.

A game streamer's Microsoft account, which they had used for 25 years, was illegally accessed, and Microsoft permanently suspended the account for 'data protection' purposes. The streamer lamented the loss of 25 years' worth of data and raised the issue on social media, after which recovery efforts were reportedly undertaken.

Game streamer Joshua Kane contacted Microsoft support after his account was compromised.
Microsoft acknowledged the unauthorized access and stated that a third party had changed the account's security settings. They responded to Kane saying they had permanently suspended the account to prevent further misuse.
As a result of this measure, Kane has reportedly lost access to all of his data, including games he had purchased worth hundreds of thousands of yen and photos of his baby that he had saved on OneDrive.
When Mr. Kane posted a screenshot of the email on social media to raise concerns, it was viewed millions of times and attracted significant attention. Gaming media outlet IGN, linking the issue to the recent news that PlayStation disc production is ending , criticized Sony and Microsoft, who provide digital libraries, saying, 'If digitalization is the only option left for gamers, then Sony and Microsoft should find a solution for account recovery.'

Later, Microsoft also received the post, and they contacted Mr. Kane to let him know they were working on recovering his account. Apparently, Mr. Kane's account was subsequently fully recovered.
We're sorry this happened, it's not the experience we want anyone to have when their account is compromised. We have been working to restore access to your purchases and reached out with the next steps. Please check your voicemail or inbox.
