Periodontal disease is a general term for diseases in which bacteria infect the supporting tissues of the teeth, such as the gums and bone, causing chronic inflammation. It is a common disease that is estimated to affect about 3.5 billion people worldwide, but if left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss, and there is also a risk that bacteria can enter the bloodstream and negatively affect overall health.
Gingivitis is a relatively mild stage of periodontal disease in which only the gums are swollen, causing redness and easy bleeding. However, it can be restored to a healthy state with daily brushing and dental flossing. However, many people find it difficult to maintain consistent dental care, and as a supplementary measure, ' postbiotics ,' which use heat-activated bacteria, are attracting attention. Because the bacteria in postbiotics are already dead, they are more stable than live bacteria and have the advantage of being easily incorporated into food products.
In this study, a research group led by Professor Takanori Iwata of the Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences, Tokyo University of Science, conducted a joint clinical trial with Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. and Tokyo Center Clinic to investigate the effect of chewing 'lactic acid bacteria-containing gummies' on improving gingivitis.

In the clinical trial, 116 adult patients with mild gingivitis were randomly assigned to either a gummy containing heat-sterilized ONRICb0240 or a gummy without lactic acid bacteria. Patients were not given any special instructions regarding brushing or other oral care, but were instructed to take either the heat-sterilized ONRICb0240 gummy or the lactic acid bacteria-free gummy twice a day for six weeks. This clinical trial was designed as a double-blind, randomized trial , meaning neither the patients nor the healthcare providers knew which group they were assigned to.
After the experiment, when the participants' gum health was evaluated, it was found that participants who ingested 'gummies containing heat-sterilized ONRICb0240' had a significantly reduced bleeding on the gums (BOP), which indicates the degree of gum inflammation, compared to participants who did not.

The BOP of the subjects who consumed the ONRICb0240-containing gummies decreased from 17.6% at the start of the experiment to 12.3%, while the BOP reduction in the control group was only 16.6%, from 18.9%.

The research team's analysis showed that the ONRICb0240-containing gummies were particularly effective in 'those with a body mass index (BMI) of 22 or higher (above average body type),' 'those who had adequate plaque control or did not have severe gingival inflammation,' and 'men.' We believe this has great social significance in presenting the possibility of a new oral care habit that can be easily incorporated into daily life by utilizing the characteristics of postbiotics, such as stability, safety, and ease of handling, in the form of foods that can be easily incorporated into daily life.'
