Problematic use of generative AI refers to situations where daily life is disrupted due to excessive time spent interacting with chat AI, repeated use of AI despite negative consequences, or inability to reduce the frequency of AI use.
Problematic users of generative AI may become overly dependent on it in areas such as work, studying, decision-making, creativity, social interaction, and emotional support. Furthermore, by completely entrusting cognitive tasks such as thinking, writing, problem-solving, and judgment—tasks that should ideally be performed by oneself—to AI, there is a risk of losing the ability and motivation to think for oneself, or falling into a state of 'cognitive surrender,' where one blindly accepts misinformation from AI.

In a new study, Assistant Professor Kagan Kurcabrun of Düzce University in Turkey investigated the link between the dark triad , a set of negative personality traits, and problematic use of generative AI. The dark triad is a collective term for socially reprehensible personality traits such as egocentrism, ruthlessness, and indifference to others, and is generally classified into the following four categories:
Narcissism is characterized by delusions of grandeur, a sense of entitlement, a strong need for admiration, and hypersensitivity to threats to one's self-image.
Machiavellianism is characterized by the strategic manipulation of others, cynicism, and a willingness to use others to achieve personal goals.
Psychopathy is characterized by ruthlessness, low empathy, impulsive behavior, and a lack of remorse.
Sadism: Characterized by the desire to derive pleasure or satisfaction from humiliating, harming, or dominating others.
Kurjabrunn used a sample of 677 participants who responded in an online survey that they 'actively use generative AI' to assess the level of problematic generative AI use and the dark triad, as well as investigate low tolerance for uncertainty and individualistic tendencies. The average age of the participants was about 40, and 50% were male.
Analysis of the data revealed that subjects who more frequently used problematic generative AI showed higher tendencies towards narcissism, as well as slightly higher levels of Machiavellianism and sadism. Furthermore, the use of problematic generative AI was associated with 'low tolerance for uncertainty' and 'high levels of vertical individualism.'
Individuals with low tolerance for uncertainty tend to find uncertain or unpredictable situations distressing and react negatively to the unknown. Vertical individualism, on the other hand, refers to a cultural orientation that accepts inequality in status, achievement, and power while emphasizing individual independence and competition.
Further analysis revealed that the correlation between problematic use of generative AI and narcissism in women was mediated through vertical individualism. In men, the correlation between problematic use of generative AI and narcissism was partially mediated through vertical individualism and low tolerance for uncertainty.
In her paper, Kurjaburun argues that narcissism may lead to a more pronounced vertical individualism, which in turn makes individuals more susceptible to problematic use of generative AI. Kurjaburun concludes, 'Overall, these findings highlight that processes related to individualistic values and uncertainty play a central role in explaining how dark personality traits contribute to problematic use of generative AI.'
