PlayStation has announced that it will end disc production for new console games in January 2028, and that only digital downloads will be available thereafter.
On July 1, 2026, PlayStation announced on the official PlayStation.Blog that disc production for new games for PlayStation consoles would end in January 2028.

PlayStation explained the reason for ending sales of physical discs as follows: 'Considering customer purchasing trends and the overall shift in the entertainment industry from physical discs to digital, we will cease production of disc versions of all new games released for PlayStation consoles from January 2028 onwards.'
Accordingly, new games released from January 2028 onwards will only be available as digital downloads on the PlayStation Store and at retailers. This change will not affect titles already released or titles released as physical discs before January 2028.
PlayStation had announced the end of physical disc production and the closure of the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3 (PS3) and PlayStation Vita at the same time, leading to some harsh comments online such as, 'It's quite a choice to announce the end of physical disc production and the closure of the digital store at the same time.'

Furthermore, some users declared they would be moving on from PlayStation following the end of physical disc production.

Other comments included: 'It's 2029, and you just bought a PS6 for $1200 (approximately 195,000 yen). All your games are digital, costing $80 (approximately 13,000 yen). You have four games in your library. Yesterday you had five, but Sony deleted one. No refunds whatsoever, they just disappear. You feel like strangling yourself with the controller's cord. But the controller is wireless.' These comments lamented the rising prices of game consoles and software, as well as the discontinuation of physical copies.

PlayStation has experienced multiple instances where purchased movies, anime, and other video content have been removed from users' libraries due to rights issues. Therefore, some are concerned that if games are sold digitally only, they might also be removed from libraries someday.
