We've compiled a list of the top 5 paid subscription services used by GIGAZINE readers, broken down by age group.

Subscription-based services vary by genre, from

Netflix and Amazon Prime for movies and TV shows, to Spotify and Apple Music for music, Nintendo Switch Online and PlayStation Plus for games, and Kindle Unlimited and d Magazine for ebooks. As monthly fees add up, it's natural to wonder 'which services are people actually using?' and 'are there any services they would like to use in the future?' We've compiled the results of a survey conducted by GIGAZINE as part of a three-times-a-year giveaway, asking GIGAZINE readers about the subscription services they use and would like to use.

First, we asked 'What subscriptions are you currently using? (Multiple selections allowed),' and the results are as follows.

Looking at the percentage of responses, Amazon Prime was the clear leader at 26.0%. Netflix came in second at 10.2%, meaning Amazon Prime was more than double Netflix's usage. Following that, 'None in particular' came in third at 8.2%, Nintendo Switch Online in fourth place at 6.3%, and

YouTube Premium in fifth place at 5.5%. Other widely used subscription services included Apple Music, U-NEXT , Spotify, d Anime Store , Adobe Creative Cloud, Kindle Unlimited, Disney+ , and Amazon Music Unlimited , covering a wide range of entertainment, creative, and e-book related services.

Next, we asked those who selected 'Other' in the previous question to freely enter the subscriptions they use, and the resulting word cloud is shown below.

In the free-response section, responses related to generative AI services such as

ChatGPT , Google AI Pro , Claude , Grok , and GitHub Copilot were prominent. Audible , ComicDAYS , Ponta Pass , AWA , YouTube Music Premium , J SPORTS On Demand, SKY PerfecTV!, Microsoft 365 , Discord , Lemino , and Twitch Turbo also received many responses.

The top 5 most frequently used subscription services by age group are summarized below. Amazon Prime and Netflix ranked 1st and 2nd across all age groups, indicating that they are standard subscription services among GIGAZINE readers of all ages. In addition, Nintendo Switch Online and YouTube Premium ranked highly among those in their teens to 50s, Apple Music, U-NEXT, and Kindle Unlimited ranked highly among those in their 60s, and d Magazine, ABEMA Premium , and Adobe Creative Cloud ranked highly among those 70 and older, showing that non-video and gaming services become more prominent as age increases.

Looking at the number of subscriptions used per person by age group, many people in their 20s to 50s use two or more subscriptions, and in particular, many people in their 20s and 30s use three or more. On the other hand, the proportion of people using '0' or '1' subscriptions increases for those 60 and older, showing a tendency for the number of subscriptions used to decrease with age.

Next, we asked, 'Please tell us which subscriptions you would like to use (multiple selections allowed).' The results are as follows.

The most common response was 'None in particular' at 20.6%, suggesting that a certain number of people are already using the subscriptions they need or do not want to add any more. In terms of specific services, Netflix topped the list at 11.6%, followed by Amazon Prime at 6.6%, YouTube Premium at 5.7%, U-NEXT at 5.7%, and Disney+ at 4.5%. While Amazon Prime stood out as the most frequently used subscription, Netflix was the most frequently mentioned service name when asked about subscriptions people would like to use, indicating a high level of interest in video streaming services.

For those who selected 'Other' in the previous question, we asked them to freely describe the subscriptions they would like to use, and the results are compiled into a word cloud below. In addition to specific service names, responses included genre names such as 'AI-related subscriptions,' 'multiple services,' and 'consumer electronics subscriptions,' showing that readers' interests are quite finely divided, including generative AI, sports streaming, video streaming, language learning, VPNs, and more.
