Snap unveils AR smart glasses 'SPECS,' priced at approximately 350,000 yen, with shipments scheduled for fall 2026.

Snap , the American company known for its photo and video sharing app 'Snapchat,' announced its AR smart glasses ' SPECS ' at the Augmented World Expo 2026 developer event held on June 16, 2026. Snap has been developing AR glasses as a next-generation device to replace smartphones, and this will be the first time they are being sold to the general public rather than just to developers.

Below is a picture of the SPECS. It looks like a pair of black-rimmed glasses, but when viewed from the side, you can see that there are cameras on both sides of the frame. Snap prioritizes privacy from the design stage, with an indicator light that illuminates when the camera is recording to alert those around it, and the user can manage permissions even if a third party requests access to the camera or microphone via the internet connection.

This is what it looks like from the side. The cross-shaped dots indicate a magnetic 5-pin interface, allowing you to easily connect the charging cable.

The frame has built-in dual stereo speakers and a microphone.

The following is a video taken by VR/AR creator

Nathie at Augmented World Expo 2026, showing Snap CEO Evan Spiegel wearing SPECS. From the front, it looks like sunglasses with a thick frame, but from the side, the temples of the glasses are longer.

Nathie also posted a video introducing SPECS, which was provided by Snap.

SPECS is a completely standalone device that requires no external units to be carried along, and does not need to be connected to a smartphone or PC. The frame is made of lightweight and durable Swiss-made TR90 polymer and comes in two sizes: a 47mm model weighing 132g and a 52mm model weighing 136g.

The lenses are removable, allowing people with impaired vision to wear lenses that accommodate a wide range of prescriptions. The display system uses proprietary silicon LCD technology, achieving a 51-degree viewing angle and 16 million colors. According to Snap, the display size is equivalent to a 24-inch desktop monitor when working, and a 115-inch home theater screen about 3 meters away when watching movies.

Snap stated, 'We believe technology can get better. We believe the best technology should be helpful when needed and unobtrusive when not needed. That's why we developed SPECS. SPECS brings computing into our everyday world. It doesn't pull us away from the present moment, but rather allows us to access information, entertainment, and various forms of support while staying connected to the people and places around us. We believe AR is the most natural way to use computers, aligning with the way people already experience the world—visual, social, and three-dimensional experiences.'

In an interview with CNBC, CEO Der Spiegel said, 'Nearly 20 years after the launch of the iPhone, people are ready to think about computing in a different way. Specs truly embodies how we can share computing with others in real-world experiences by looking up through transparent lenses rather than looking at an opaque screen. This announcement will be an important step for investors as they will witness many advancements they have never seen before. But this is only a new step.'

As of the time of writing, SPECS is accepting pre-orders on its official website, with shipments scheduled for the fall of 2026 in the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. The price is $2,195 (approximately 350,000 yen). Availability in Japan is unknown at the time of writing. Further details about SPECS are expected to be released in the latter half of 2026.
