AMD acquires MEXT to address AI memory shortages, developing technology that treats flash memory as DRAM.



On June 15, 2026, AMD announced its acquisition of MEXT, a company that develops memory-related technologies. MEXT has developed technology that allows inexpensive flash memory to be used as high-speed DRAM, and this is expected to help alleviate the memory shortage in AI.

High-performance GPUs and high-speed, high-capacity volatile memory are essential for AI development and service deployment. The AI boom has led to increased demand for volatile memory, resulting in soaring prices for VRAM and DRAM from the latter half of 2025. MEXT is developing a technology that treats flash memory, a relatively inexpensive non-volatile memory, as DRAM. Although flash memory is slower than DRAM, MEXT claims that by using 'predictive AI that operates at a lower layer than the application,' flash memory can be made to operate at the same speed as DRAM. By introducing MEXT's technology into AI servers, it is possible to increase the amount of DRAM that can be recognized by the OS by 2 to 4 times while reducing costs by 50%.
