OpenAI has announced 'Advanced Account Security,' a new opt-in setting for ChatGPT accounts. 'Advanced Account Security' is designed for users at high risk of digital attacks or those seeking the highest level of account protection. It integrates advanced security measures to prevent account hijacking, allowing users to easily enable protection in one place.
'Advanced Account Security' integrates a set of controls that enhance account protection when signing in, tighten account recovery, mitigate the risk of session breaches, and improve visibility into account activity. 'Advanced Account Security' can be enabled from the security section of your ChatGPT account on the web.
The following protection features become available when 'Advanced Account Security' is enabled:
- Disable sign-in codes via email and SMS.
- Disable password-based sign-in.
- Disable account recovery via email.
- Disable the use of conversations for training AI models.
Enable email alerts for login attempts.
Enable active session time reduction.
Furthermore, enabling 'Advanced Account Security' requires a stronger sign-in method, such as a passkey or hardware security key. Using a hardware security key is also an option. Any compatible FIDO security key can be used, and OpenAI has partnered with Yubico to offer discounted security keys.

OpenAI also explained that a 'significant trade-off' when using 'advanced account security' is that 'advanced account security prioritizes security over convenience. Because recovery methods are limited, account recovery becomes difficult.'
