I took a variety of photos with the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, a smartphone equipped with an optical zoom lens and capable of shooting at up to 200 million pixels.
The Xiaomi 17 Ultra is a smartphone equipped with three rear cameras bearing the Leica brand. It features high-performance cameras, including a main camera with a 1-inch sensor and a telephoto camera capable of shooting at 200 megapixels with optical zoom. It also has the interesting feature of taking on the appearance of a digital camera when a dedicated grip is attached. I was able to borrow the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, so I tried to see what kind of photos it could take.

The Xiaomi 17 Ultra features a camera jointly developed by Xiaomi and Leica, and with the separately sold dedicated case attached, it takes on the appearance of a digital camera. Furthermore, it uses a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 SoC, resulting in not only excellent camera performance but also very high overall processing power. The rear camera consists of three lenses: 'ultra-wide-angle,' 'main,' and 'telephoto.' Together, these three cameras are named the ' VARIO-APO-SUMMILUX 1:1.67-2.9/14-100 ASPH. ', a Leica lens designation. The main camera features a large 1-inch sensor, unusual for a smartphone. The telephoto camera has an optical zoom lens and supports shooting at up to 200 megapixels. Furthermore, both the main and telephoto cameras are equipped with optical image stabilization. Specifications are as follows:
Ultra-wide angle: Sensor size 1/2.75 inch, 50 million pixels, focal length 14mm (35mm equivalent)
Main: 1-inch sensor, 50 million pixels, 23mm focal length (35mm equivalent)
Telephoto: Sensor size 1/1.4 inch, 200 million pixels, focal length 23mm (75-100mm equivalent)
The zoom magnification is 0.6x for the ultra-wide angle, 1x for the main lens, and 3.2-4.3x for the telephoto lens, with other magnifications being compensated for by digital zoom. The 35mm equivalent focal lengths are 14mm for the ultra-wide angle, 23mm for the main lens, and 75-100mm for the telephoto lens.
So, I tried taking various photos. First, I tried taking photos in the same location while switching the focal length. This is what it looks like with an ultra-wide-angle lens. Note that the example photos in this article have not been edited other than being resized, and you can see the original size of each photo by clicking on it.

From here on, we're using digital zoom. At 200mm, the image is clean and the imperfections are not very noticeable.

The maximum digital zoom magnification is 120x. The equivalent focal length in 35mm format is 2760mm. As expected, at this zoom level, fine details are lost, resulting in an image that looks like a coloring book.

The Xiaomi 17 Ultra's telephoto camera can shoot at up to 200 megapixels. To shoot at 200 megapixels, switch the camera mode to '200MP' and select a focal length from '75mm,' '85mm,' '90mm,' or '100mm.'
When you tap the shutter button, the photo is divided into nine grids and processed sequentially.
The following is the result of shooting with a 200-megapixel camera. The resolution is 16320 x 12288 pixels, and the number of pixels is 200,541,600. Clicking to view the full-size photo will show that even the weeds growing from the gaps in the stairs are captured in detail.

I ordered a curry set. The depth of field is shallow, so if I focus on the rice in the foreground, the curry in the background is out of focus.

I walked to the station at night. Even at night, the noise level wasn't very noticeable.

The same photo was taken from the same location using a 100mm lens. When you examine the full-size photo, you can see that the rough texture of the asphalt and even the lettering on the sign are clearly captured.

I took a photo of the road with a 23mm lens. The shutter speed was 1/25th of a second, which resulted in a blurred effect of cars and motorcycles.

Shot from the same location with a 75mm lens. The compression effect makes the colorful signs appear tightly packed together. Although the shutter speed was relatively long, the optical image stabilization allowed me to take the photo without blurring.
