While it had been reported that OpenAI had no plans to enter the mobile phone market, Kuo analyzed that 'OpenAI needs complete control over both the OS and hardware in order to provide comprehensive AI agent services.' At the same time, Kuo suggested that OpenAI may have decided that entering the mobile phone market was the only way to provide comprehensive AI agent services and therefore made a major shift in its strategy.

For development, OpenAI has selected MediaTek and Qualcomm as processor development partners, and Luxshare Precision Industry is expected to be the exclusive co-design and manufacturing partner for the system. Specific chip specifications and additional suppliers are expected to be decided between the second half of 2026 and the first quarter of 2027, with mass production of the product projected to begin in 2028.

Kuo emphasized that smartphones are the only devices that can grasp a user's real-time state, including their current location, activities, communication, and context, and he analyzed that this will be the most important input data for AI agent reasoning.

With the arrival of this new device, users are expected to complete tasks through a contextually understandable, continuous interface rather than launching individual apps, fundamentally changing how they use smartphones.

Furthermore, by offering hardware and subscriptions as a business model, they seem to aim to build a new developer ecosystem centered around AI agents.

Meanwhile, OpenAI, in collaboration with io Products led by Jony Ive, is also developing non-phone-based hardware such as smart speakers, smart glasses, and smart lamps, with the first product announcement expected in the latter half of 2026 and release in early 2027.

On the same day as Kuo's post, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman posted a cryptic comment on X (formerly Twitter) saying, 'I feel this is a good opportunity to seriously rethink how we design operating systems and user interfaces.'
