A private server called 'Turtle WoW,' which was hosting Blizzard's game 'World of Warcraft (WoW)' without permission, has been shut down following a lawsuit.

Turtle WoW was a server that offered a modified version of the 2006 World of Warships (WoW), making the paid version of WoW available for free and adding its own unique features not found in the original. Since its launch in 2018, it seems to have enjoyed a certain level of popularity, with a peak of over 70,000 concurrent players.
However, Blizzard, the official operator of WoW, did not tolerate the existence of this server and filed a lawsuit in 2025, claiming that it infringed on their intellectual property rights.
Blizzard stated, 'Unlicensed private servers alienate dedicated WoW players, pose security risks to players, divide the community, and create confusion about which WoW is officially supported. Furthermore, private servers like Turtle WoW encourage and promote video game piracy by allowing players to avoid paying for the game experience that Blizzard has invested so much time and money into creating.'
In April 2026, Blizzard received a favorable ruling in this lawsuit, ordering the developers of Turtle WoW to cease development, programming, coding, operation, updates, support, and maintenance.
The development team has decided to shut down Turtle WoW and has announced that the servers will be taken offline at 0:00 on May 15, 2026.
