It was discovered that a link to Polymarket's 'betting' was appearing in Google News's 'recommended' section.

Google News has a 'Recommended' section that displays news tailored to the user's personal interests, but it has been reported that instead of news, it was displaying betting information for

Polymarket , a prediction market where users can bet on cryptocurrencies. Google explained that this was a 'temporary error.'

The technology news site Futurism reported that Polymarket's betting information appeared in the 'Recommended' section of Google News, sometimes even appearing at the very top. Furthermore, when searching for current events on Google, Polymarket's betting links appeared high in the search results, alongside news from major media outlets such as the Financial Times, The Guardian, and Reuters.

According to Futurism, it's unclear when Polymarket's betting information started appearing in Google News, but it's thought to have happened around late March 2026. One of the oldest reports is from Anthony Higman, who covers topics like digital marketing, and he states, 'Wow, the top result on Google News is Polymarket (lol). It's over.' Other users have also reported seeing Polymarket's betting information in the news section of Google Search around January 2026.

In November 2025, Google signed an agreement with prediction market platforms Polymarket and Kalshi to integrate data into its financial platform. While the financial terms have not been disclosed, it is believed that Google Finance will provide fluctuating odds from prediction market exchanges when users seek information on future events. It is unclear whether Polymarket's recent appearance in Google News is related to this partnership, but Futurism points out that 'it is easy to imagine that Polymarket, which generates a vast number of pages about betting and makes them appear on the surface as valuable news articles through repeated minor changes, has become attractive to Google's algorithms.'

On the other hand, Polymarket has also been criticized for 'spreading extremely irresponsible false information while using journalistic terminology.' It has also been plagued by ethical concerns about turning everything into gambling, as well as a negative image associated with insider trading. In fact, when US President Donald Trump launched a large-scale operation against Venezuela on January 3, 2026, to arrest and extradite Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, a person who had made a profit of $409,882.03 (approximately 64 million yen) by predicting the timing of Maduro's resignation using a newly created account was questioned as possibly being a government official. To improve this negative image, prediction market platforms like Polymarket are taking steps such as providing real-time prediction data to CNN's live news programs and announcing a partnership with Dow Jones, the publisher of the Wall Street Journal, to provide prediction data for publications.

In this context, Polymarket's inclusion in Google News could be considered a major victory. However, Google spokesperson Ned Adrians told The Verge that 'Google News is designed to display sources that create content about current events, happenings and important topics, and we have policies regarding which sites are eligible to be featured. Polymarket was temporarily mistakenly included in Google News, but it is no longer included in the news,' explaining that Polymarket's inclusion was unintentional and that the problem has been fixed so it is no longer displayed.
