At approximately 4:12 AM Pacific Standard Time on Friday, April 10, 2026, a fire broke out in a residential area of San Francisco's North Beach district. Police responded to a report and found the fire extinguished by security guards, with no casualties. A Molotov cocktail was used to start the fire.

Later, at around 5:07 a.m., police received a report of someone threatening to set a building on fire near 1400 Third Street. Police confirmed that the person was the same individual who had fled the fire and apprehended him. OpenAI's headquarters are located at 1455 Third Street.

Following further investigation, police arrested the 20-year-old man, stating that 'there was sufficient grounds for arrest.' The motive remains unclear. According to the local newspaper, the San Francisco Chronicle, police are investigating him on suspicion of attempted murder, threats, and possession or manufacture of explosives, but prosecutors have not yet filed charges.

After reporting that his family was safe, Altman confessed that he had 'underestimated the power of words and stories.' He then stated that it is his 'moral duty to empower everyone and advance science and technology with the aim of prosperity for all,' and explained the necessity of AI for that purpose. He also expressed the view that AI must be democratized because it needs to empower individuals, and that it is wrong for power to become too concentrated and for only a few research organizations to make important decisions.

He then acknowledged the criticism stemming from concerns about the risks AI poses and empathized with the anti-AI sentiment, stating his belief that 'technology is not always good for everyone. But overall, I believe that technological advancements will bring a wonderful future to your family and my family.' He concluded by saying, 'While we continue the discussion, we should avoid extreme language and methods, and strive to reduce the number of families that experience 'explosions,' both figuratively and literally.'
