Why did the smartphone with a 'stretchable' screen, which reached the prototype stage, never get released?

Technology YouTuber Zach Nelson obtained a prototype of the ' LG Rollable, ' a smartphone with a stretchable screen that LG had previously developed, and disassembled it to analyze its internal mechanisms.

This is the 'LG Rollable'.

By swiping the right edge of the screen, the right side of the screen automatically expands or contracts. This means you can use it in its slim, portable form for everyday use, and then enlarge the screen when you want to enjoy content more thoroughly.

This is what the expandable mechanism looks like from above. You can see a mechanism that resembles a zipper on clothing.

Upon removing the back cover and inspecting the inside of the expandable section, the following was observed. It does not appear to be waterproof or dustproof.

This is what it looks like with the screen removed.

If you extend the screen while it's detached, you'll see that the extended portion is supported by a single silver rod and three black springs.

Removing the silver rod reveals the following. These two motors moved the silver rod, enabling the screen to expand and contract.

The LG Rollable was scheduled for release in 2021, but LG withdrew from the smartphone business that same year, and it was never released.

The news site Ars Technica praised the LG Rollable for its 'amazingly sophisticated design,' but also analyzed its shortcomings, noting that its 'internal structure is complex and costly' and that 'it lacks water and dust resistance, raising questions about its long-term durability.'

Since the LG Rollable was never released, the last product LG released before withdrawing from the smartphone business was the unique '

LG WING ,' a smartphone with a screen that rotates 90 degrees.
