There have been reports of instances where the titles of linked pages in Google search results are automatically changed to AI-generated headings.

It has been confirmed that the link titles (headlines) displayed in Google search results are being replaced with AI-generated titles instead of the titles set by the website creators. In some cases, the meaning of the title has been completely altered as a result of the AI rewriting the headline.
Google Search is now using AI to replace headlines | The Verge

According to online media outlet The Verge, Google's Google Discover feature , which displays recommended news and content, has been observed to be changing news headlines with clickbait- like wording generated by AI since around December 2025. In addition, The Verge reported on March 20, 2026, that it has also been observed replacing headlines of websites displayed in Google search results with those generated by AI.
According to The Verge, there was an instance where a news headline that read, 'I used the 'cheat on everything' AI tool and it didn't help me cheat on anything,' was shortened by AI to 'Cheat on everything AI tool' in Google search results, changing its meaning. In addition, there are cases where headlines are unintentionally altered in ways that The Verge doesn't normally do, such as capitalizing the first letter of each word in the headline, as seen in the news article highlighted in black below.

A Google spokesperson told The Verge that 'what is currently being done is a small-scale, limited experiment and has not yet been approved for widespread deployment,' thus acknowledging the use of AI to change headlines. Google also stated that it is adjusting not only news headlines like those of The Verge, but also how other websites appear in search results.
According to Google, the purpose of using AI to rewrite headlines is to 'better match site titles to users' search queries and increase click-through rates.' A spokesperson stated that the use of AI to generate titles is experimental and that they will not use the generation AI in any future releases based on this experiment.
When Google Discover was automatically generating news titles, The Verge criticized it as 'like a bookstore peeling off the covers of books on display and replacing them.' According to The Verge, the headline changes observed this time are very rare and not as bad as those frequently seen with Google Discover. However, since Google Discover's AI headlines were initially experimental but are expanding, The Verge states, 'This may be a canary in the coal mine . Google may change the terms of the contract further in the future. This is the first time we've seen Google overwrite search result headlines with its own content, and we want to make it clear that this is an abnormal situation.'
